STILL LIFE PAINTINGS

Nature Morte, Stilleben, Natura Morte

The still life paintings of Elena Roché are not staged, but rather painted from an everyday still life scene as it presents itself.  Consequently, her body of work of still life paintings tends to increase slowly.  The paintings exhibited below are executed in two classic mediums:  dry pastel and oil.  The Flaunt Magazine Commission series of drawings is executed in colored pencil.

While oil is the more commonly seen medium, dry pastel still life painting has perhaps the best "shelf-life" because there is no carrying agent, as in oils, to dry and deteriorate, change color or crack.  Only the mineral color pigment is applied.  This pigment is barely held together in a usable form by a negligible amount of gum binder that has no effect on the color now or in the future.  The sticks of pastel are crude and cumbersome, and yet Elena's pastels share the level of detail of highly worked oil paintings.

The visual qualities of oil and pastel are also different.  With oil paintings one can achieve crisp edges and darker, deeper shadows.  Oils tend to reflect light in a more uniform, shiny manner.  Pastels have a softer edge and tend to generously reflect light in more of a "glow" than a reflection.  Both mediums have their unique charm.

Elena's pastels are executed on Ampersand Board and her oils are executed on traditional stretched canvas.  The colored pencil drawings are executed on museum board.
