Paintings of Pasadena This is a plein air oil painting of the Colorado Street Bridge in Arroyo Seco, Pasadena, California in late October, 2006. It was painted during a paint-out picnic of the California Art Club, of which Elena is a member. Many artists have painted this beautiful bridge since its dedication in December of 1913. When completed, the Colorado Street Bridge was not only the first curvilinear bridge ever designed but also the tallest concrete bridge of its day. It is now a Civil Engineering Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years this scene has gone through major changes. A new freeway bridge, which can be seen in the background, was build to the north of the Colorado Street bridge. The river flowing beneath the bridge was put in an underground pipe and an overflow concrete drain was build in its place. The channel was fenced with chain link and a pedestrian path was added on both sides. Following the Loma Prieta earthquake on October 17, 1989, the Colorado Street Bridge was closed to traffic and underwent major restoration until it was reopened on December 13, 1993. The City of Pasadena is contemplating the restoration of Arroyo Seco to its natural state which would include plantings of native species and a partial removal of the concrete drain. In this painting Elena Roché captured Arroyo Seco as it was in October, 2006 with all of its bridges, concrete drainage channel and chain link fences.
