Landscape Painting This is a painting of the view from Malibu Lagoon, Malibu, California in spring of 2007. The lagoon was created by Malibu Creek running year round through the Santa Monica Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. This creek carved scenic Malibu Canyon seen in the background. The bridge cutting through this wild bird refuge is part of the Pacific Coast Highway. A little sand island in the middle of the lagoon is always full of wild birds. Pelicans, seagulls, cranes and ducks make this lagoon an attractive spot for the artist. In spring the slopes of Malibu Canyon are lush green and glow in the rays of the setting sun. On the left, west slope of the canyon are some houses with the famous Malibu Castle dominating the slope. Unfortunately in the early morning of October 21, 2007, during fierce Santa Ana winds, a wild fire came down Malibu Canyon and a large part of the castle was destroyed. As a result of that tragedy, this painting has become an historic document of the way Malibu looked before the fire.
